Thursday 07/03/2019 Weekly blog update

The new engine has been modified. The original 3D printed flywheel was replaced with a custom designed aluminium flywheel. I have also designed a bracket to hold my position sensor along with a GT2 gear. Here is a clip of the engine operating. I have tested the chosen spring that will be used to operate with the position sensor. I am also preparing for the next phase of my project where I attempt close loop control of the air displacer piston. I plan on using a DC motor fitted with an encoder. The challenge I am facing is converting rotational motion into linear motion. I am exploring three methods of solving this. Also i will require a motor with a high rpm that will be able to keep up with the power piston. Slider-Crank mechanism. Scotch Yoke mechanism. Cam-Rod mechanism.

Thursday 31/01/2019 Weekly blog update

This week saw me doing the necessary research required prior to commencing my project. My literature review page has been updated accordingly and I will keep doing so regularly as it is an ongoing process. You can check up on my Literature Review here. The following image is a loop from Labview for reading two analog sensors. So far I only have two sensors. One is a hall effect position sensor for monitoring the position of the power piston. With this information, I will be able to determine the chamber volume at any instance. The other is a pressure transducer which, when connected to the chamber, will provide real-time pressure readings during engine operation. These two sensors are vital for creating pressure versus volume diagram for measuring engine output work. Images of all the components will be added to my Gallery as they come in. Tuesday 26/01/2019 - Research / Resource gathering

This week I will commence my project by gathering research. I intend to keep it relevant, therefore the focus will mainly be on efficiency and the applicable mathematical equations. My Literature review link will be updated accordingly. Based on my background in mechanical engineering, I already have an idea about some of the sensors required for engine monitoring so I will also be sourcing some electronic components. Since my project is taking place in National Instruments Labview using MyRio, I will also be creating a project Virtual Instrument (VI) and configuring the device to be operated over WiFi for convenience.
